ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

hello

I was wondering on how to join the dev wiki community

3:56

KockaAdmiralac

What do you mean by "join"

3:56

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

like, be a coder

3:56

KockaAdmiralac

Hmm

3:57

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

Not necessarily sure about actually doing it, I was just curious

Though I might

3:57

KockaAdmiralac

If you wanted to publish content to Dev you should probably first know CSS, JavaScript or Lua, but publishing scripts, stylesheets and modules isn't the only way to contribute to Dev I guess

3:58

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

oh ok

what are the other ways you speak of

3:58

KockaAdmiralac

Hmm

Well certain ways of contributing to any wiki apply to Dev as well

Such as typo fixing and stuff

3:59

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

ok

3:59

KockaAdmiralac

Then there are also translations of content and documentation

w:c:dev:Project:I18n

But for English-only users that's probably not an option

4:00

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

Is hindi a largely used language on fandom/wikia

4:00

KockaAdmiralac

It doesn't have to be in order to publish translations for it to Dev :P

4:01

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

oh ok

welp I just gave away my ethnicity

oh well

4:01

KockaAdmiralac

It's just preferable if you're a native speaker but higher levels of language knowledge may work too

4:01

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

mK

4:02

KockaAdmiralac

Though, I'm not seeing Hindi listed in untranslated scripts listing so I'm going to add it there

4:03

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

One main question I had was how code is "published"

4:03

KockaAdmiralac

Alright, so https://dev.wikia.com/wiki/Dev_Wiki:I18n?uselang=hi#Reports should be listing scripts and documentation that aren't translated to Hindi

Hmm

4:04

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

oh wow that's a lot

4:04

KockaAdmiralac

If it's a script or a stylesheet, you create a MediaWiki:Pagename.js/css page for it

(But first you should probably be reading w:c:dev:DEV:CC if you want to contribute scripts or stylesheets)

(and w:c:dev:DEV:P regardless of the contribution method)

Anyways

4:05

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

So once you click "Publish" after editing, then you can just automatically use it on a wiki

Or does it have to be approved or anything

4:05

KockaAdmiralac

If it's a stylesheet, yes

If it's a script, it has to be approved

4:05

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

ok then

4:05

KockaAdmiralac

But the thing with content on Dev is that it must follow certain guidelines and should be documented in the article namespace

So scripts that are only useful for a single wiki or scripts that 99% copy another script and just modify a single functionality aren't usually the type of content that should be published to Dev

4:07

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

So it has to be wikia-wide

4:07

KockaAdmiralac

And very short stylesheets that sometimes can't be imported should usually go to w:c:dev:CSS Cookbook

The content published to Dev should be useful to several wikis, yeah

4:08

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

So how would you be able to test a script before publishing?

Or do you just test it on a wiki?

4:08

KockaAdmiralac

You usually don't test scripts by posting them on your personal JS pages

4:08

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

then...

4:09

KockaAdmiralac

Most script publishers on Dev test their scripts through their JavaScript console of their browser

CTRL+SHIFT+I on Chrome

4:09

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

Just curious, but *can* you test it on a wiki?

4:09

KockaAdmiralac

Yes

4:09

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

makes sense

4:09

KockaAdmiralac

Scripts on Dev are still only scripts

4:10

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

yeah

So say for something like this:

https://dev.wikia.com/wiki/IsTyping

Where does the installation code come from?

4:12

KockaAdmiralac

The installation is just an autogenerated importArticles statement

It lets users add that into their JS and then it imports the actual script

4:12

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

oh so it's just the same format

?

4:13

KockaAdmiralac

Because if users were copy-pasting the script into their JS updating that script would be a pain

So they put the importArticles({...}); statement into their JS and it loads w:c:dev:MediaWiki:IsTyping.js

If that makes sense

4:15

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

So first you write a code page, then you make the info page on it?

4:15

KockaAdmiralac

Yeah

4:16

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

So when you make the info page it has to follow a certain format

4:17

KockaAdmiralac

It _should_ follow a certain format

w:c:dev:DEV:CC#Documentation best practice

4:18

ThoseWhoWanderAreNotLost

ah ok

So you need to go to an admin for approval? Or is there someone else to go to?

Like, approval of a script
