During the Age of Sophie Foster, the ogres let loose a plague that got many gnomes sick. This ended up being the fault of the Neverseen, who had persuaded the king of the ogres to let this plague loose. Sophie was fourteen at this time and was able to stop this plague with a Panake tree, which her gnomish friend, Calla, sacrificed herself for. The Panake blossoms healed the gnomes before any passed away, but Calla was treasured and missed. The plague still frightened many and caused the gnomes to doubt their alliance with the elves.

Sophie Elizabeth Foster, an elf who had been cared for by humans for years, came to the Lost Cities when she was about twelve (human years) or thirteen (elvin years). During her lifetime, she helped change the Lost Cities for the better through a series of events. One was investigating the plague. The Plague was an ogre-created sickness that was made to blackmail the gnomes to service in Ravagog that the Neverseen persuaded Kind Dimitar to use. Sophie, as well as her friends and other Black Swan members traveled to Ravagog to where they found that Panakes was the only cure to the plague. While in Ravagog, Linh Song, an elf traveling with Sophie, flooded the ogre city while attempting to get the other members of the team out. Later, the group discovered that a Panakes Tree was gnome who accepted sacrifice to help others, causing Calla, a gnome friend of Sophie’s, to sacrifice herself in order to end the plague.
